Final Report Abstract

The Research Training Group was in the area of high temperature plasma physics including laser and magnetically confined fusion plasmas. These fields have gained significant momentum during the last decade due to the availability of high power laser systems and the international agreement to build ITER and is now one of the most exciting fields of physics and technology. The investigations included new exotic states of matter in the relativistic regime, ion and electron acceleration and modern topics of magnetic confinement related to the newest developments in realizing a burning fusion plasma in ITER. As the Research Training Group covered both areas, the research benefited from the synergies between the two modern fields of plasma physics. The collegiates were able to use the local experimental facilities, the Arcturus 200 TW laser system in Düsseldorf and the TEXTOR tokamak in Jülich. In addition, the collegiates had access to major international and national facilities, for example, JET (UK) and Large Laser Facilities including the VULCAN laser in the UK, the LULI laser in France and the TITAN laser at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (USA). The collegiates were offered a wide range of high temperature plasma physics courses, seminars and workshops and hence obtained a highly qualified education in experimental, numerical and theoretical plasma physics beside various soft and management skills.
