GRK 1566:  Protecting the Heart from Ischemia (PROMISE)

Subject Area Medicine
Term from 2009 to 2013
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 88921390

The International Research Training Group is made up of a network of scientists from Giessen and Barcelona with a strong thematic focus in this important area of medical research. It is based on long-standing scientific cooperation between both locations. Participants were selected for their scientific merits and mutual compatibility of their research interests. Methodological expertise spans from molecular and cellular biology to integrated animal physiology and clinical science. The central focus of the research is on ischemic heart disease, i.e. the most eminent single cause of death in industrialised countries. Recent years have brought new insights into its pathomechanisms that have led to new concepts for clinical therapy.
Research projects address the underlying causes of coronary vessel disease, myocardial cell injury by ischemia and reperfusion and strategies for tissue regeneration. It is the aim of the Research Training Group to address these research topics in an interdisciplinary approach, with great attraction for doctoral researchers dedicated to this important general field of medical research. The network will offer them a unique opportunity to pursue scientifically challenging research projects in an environment of internationally acknowledged scientific excellence and competent tutoring. The educational goals of the network will be achieved by a programme of in-lab, out-of-lab and network-wide activities. Early exposure to practical research activities outside of the home laboratory, especially on the international level, will foster the professional development of the young doctoral researchers.
We are convinced that not only the eminent importance of this area of research, but also the exposure to interdisciplinary and international experiences, will render those graduating from this programme most suited for a future career in research or industry.
