Time-resolved laser spectroscopy of reactive and nonreactive processes in ionic liquids and their mixtures with carbon dioxide

Subject Area Physical Chemistry of Molecules, Liquids and Interfaces, Biophysical Chemistry
Term from 2008 to 2014
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 90765182

Nonreactive and reactive dynamics of molecules in ionic liquids, ionic liquid mixtures and at the semiconductor - ionic liquid interface will be investigated by femtosecond to millisecond transient broadband absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy to elucidate the importance of the different types of solute-solvent interactions in these media. Carotenoids, a quinolone, phthalimide, and indolines will be used as reporter molecules for ionic liquid solvation dynamics, micropolarity and hydrogen-bonding. The influence of neat ionic liquids and their mixtures will be studied for model reactions, such as the photoisomerization of indoline and thiazoline derivatives, electron transfer processes involving indoline dyes attached to ZnO surfaces used in dye-sensitized solar cells, and selected radical combination reactions.
