Final Report Abstract

Within the five weeks of field work and the subsequent interpretation of the four logged sections and the more than 500 samples by sedimentology, biostratigraphy, microfacies analyses, and cyclostratigraphy a regional evolution of the NE part of the Sverdrup Basin is established. Marine sedimentation started within the Bashkirian (or earlier) in the deepest parts of the NE subbasin, which extends further west than previously expected. The basinal areas are characterized by anhydrites and siliciclastics. During the Baskhirian a sea-level fall resulted in the deposition of shallow-marine carbonates in the former basinal areas, while along the margin red siliciclastic terrestrial deposits occured. From Moscovian time onwards cyclic shallow-marine sedimentation prevailed in all parts of the investigated area, which are especially well developed in the more than 600 m thick section Y from the Yelverton Pass. For the future it is planned to publish the results of this project in two to three publications. Furthermore, the cyclostratigraphic results, especially of section Y will serve as a regional basis for a supra-regional cycle correlation, covering Ellesmere Island and Svalbard.
