FOR 630:  Biological Function of Organometallic Compounds

Subject Area Chemistry
Medicine
Term from 2006 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 14065420

Bioorganometallic Chemistry is a young and interdisciplinary field of study. This Research Unit will establish organometallic chemistry as part of medicinal chemistry. Selected classes of organometallic compounds will be studied in their interaction with cellular components like receptors, proteins, peptides and DNA. The compounds will be optimised by variation of structural properties with respect to cellular uptake, intracellular localisation, and finally, their cytotoxic properties. We are aiming to identify metal-specific mechanisms of cytotoxicity.
The findings will guide the design of novel metal-based lead structures and contribute to the understanding of signalling pathways and protein expression patterns. The seven participating groups combine a broad expertise from organic and metal-organic synthesis to analytical chemistry, biochemistry and cell biology. By combining the broad and diverse expertise of these groups, the core of a competent network is formed that will contribute to the development of medicinal bioorganometallic chemistry in Germany and beyond.
