The proposed research is about the design, analysis, implementation and deployment of new secure and efficient routing protocols for open and heterogeneous networks. Routing protocols are the fundamental building block of the Internet and many security problems arise from limitations in the existing routing algorithms and protocols. Specically, the Internet routing protocols that are currently used are not designed to handle byzantine failure and require trusted providers to manage the infrastructure. Sadly, network providers often cannot be trusted because of issues such as incompetence or malice. The existing architecture also makes it difficult to build alternative secure ad-hoc community networks, forcing users to use \trusted" Internet Service Providers (ISPs) for convenient network access. Successful execution of the proposed work will enable end-users to participate freely in fully decentralized networks without the need for trusted parties. It will also provide for smooth integration or migration of existing Internet applications to such networks, and will, moreover, enable a whole new range of applications. The main challenge of the project is to provide a decentralized, scalable solution that provides desired security properties and ideally also provides economic incentives for operators to provide quality network service. The proposed design imposes no unusual requirements on the hardware and is intented to operate under realistic assumptions about adversaries participating in the operation of the network.
