Aerodynamic and aero acoustic investigation of embedded engines (A03)

Subject Area Hydraulic and Turbo Engines and Piston Engines
Term from 2011 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 133733460

Over-the-wing-mounted UHBR engines offer acoustic benefits as well as mission-related advantages com-pared to propeller driven aircraft. The realization of these advantages requires a fundamental understanding of the aerodynamic as well as the aero-acoustic phenomena, which have been rarely investigated, especially together with active high-lift systems for short take-off and landing capabilities. This project also investi-gates the design and integration of the airframe and the UHBR engine components and their corresponding interactions. The obtained performance results shall confirm the potentials of this propulsion concept. How-ever, these results will also reveal the high aerodynamic sensitivities and thus the necessity of further re-search to develop this configuration, as opposed to the already heavily investigated REF2-configuration.
