The objective of the PP is to investigate artificial photosynthesis based on solid-state inorganic materialsfrom a fundamental scientific perspective as well as the aspects of material science required for itstechnological implementation. New basic approaches are required that merge scientific innovation withadvanced engineering strategies. In the second period of the PP as additional constrain improvedcollaboration schemes must be implemented which are needed to integrate the results and device structuresof individual projects of the PP to cooperative research actions for combining the different components tointegrated device structures.Efficient artificial photosynthesis can only be realized by coupling a number of successive elementaryprocesses, including broad band light absorption, optimized charge carrier generation and separation as wellas an efficient electro catalytic production of H2 and O2 from H2O in separated compartments. Fortechnological implementation, complex device structures must be manufactured, preferably using materialsthat are economical, abundant and non-hazardous. In the face of the diversity of possible solutions thisprogram concentrates on the combination of photovoltaic converters and catalysts, both of which are highlyefficient and stable, a strategy which may lead to viable solutions in the near future.
