Einstein¿s general relativity successfully describes gravity through the Riemannian geometry of curved spacetime. However, candidate theories of quantum gravity, in particular, string theory, show that Einstein¿s theory is valid only for low energy processes. The main aim of this proposal is the investigation of generalized theories of gravity and their consequences for high energy processes which become important near the spacetime singularities of black holes and in the cosmology of the early Universe. This research will be based on the further development and application of methods from differential geometry, not only including work on gravity theories with curvature corrections and curvature bounds, but also the discussion of conceptional issues of geometries beyond the Riemannian. Along this way insights relevant for quantum gravity are expected. A further important part of this proposal is string cosmology, including work on the geometric classification of possible cosmological solutions within string theory and their compatibility with observations.
