Scientific computing in mathematics, science, and engineering has seen a dramatic development over the past few years. This is due to the ever increasing complexity of the models used to describe real-world phenomena, to the enormous computing power now available, and, first of all, to the great progress in the field of modelling and simulation. While the methodical approach of scientific computing is generally accepted by academic and industrial researchers alike, the subject has not yet found its proper place in the education of doctoral students. The IWR is dedicated to the advancement of scientific computing in mathematics and natural sciences through interdisciplinary cooperation. The work done at the IWR covers the whole range from experiment, modelling and analysis to simulation, optimization and control, including the visualization of the results.A major objective is to establish a new programme of doctoral education in scientific computing, as well as to develop an interdisciplinary quality standard based on the traditional standards of the invididual disciplines. Especially the latter aspect appears to be extremely important to strenghten the role of scientific computing methods in the traditional disciplines. The participating groups from mathematics, computer science, chemistry, and physics have many years of experience of common interdisciplinary research and can therefore contribute significantly to the new programme of doctoral education.
