Selective separation of submicron particles from milling processes based on electrostatically induced particle-particle interactions

The production of suspensions containing submicron or nano particles via wet grinding processes is a common process step for a large number of products. The variety in products ranges from very soft and organic particles to very hard and abrasive materials. High-energy milling produces a contaminating abrasion at the mill and in particular at the grinding media, which remains in the suspension so far, since it has similar particle sizes as the product. For products with high purity requirements, selective separation of these particles may be very worthwhile. As part of the research project, the selective agglomeration of the wear particles and their separation will be focused accordingly. While soft materials were the main focus of the first phase, in this phase the focus is on medium-hard to hard products, which induce a very different wear behavior on the grinding media. Thus, questions have to be clarified, such as: how does the particle size distribution of the resulting wear change, which mechanisms with regard to selective agglomeration and separation are suitable for these particle size distributions and concentrations, and how can this be integrated into milling processes from the process engineering point of view.
