Dynamical understanding of “windows of forecast opportunity” (A08)

Teleconnections link the stratosphere and organized convection in the tropics to midlatitude weather, and most notably to persistent weather conditions that may lead to high-impact weather events. Under certain circumstances, these teleconnections imply “windows of forecast opportunity”, i.e., longer than usual predictability. Understanding of when such opportunities can indeed be realized, however, is incomplete. To better exploit the predictability potential in the future, this project seeks process-based understanding of the underlying teleconnections and how they constraint the growth of forecast errors.
