Application and analysis of adiabatic blanking

Adiabatic blanking is an efficient process to separate high-strength materials. Punch velocities are increased by a factor of 20 compared to conventional shear blanking. Due to the short process time, the heat generated during the separation operation cannot be transferred, resulting in a strong thermal softening induced by local temperatures of over 800 °C. The resulting blanked surfaces exhibit high quality in terms of geometrical accuracy, roughness and absence of burr.One aim of the project is to investigate the influence of pre-deformation on the development and microstructure of the localization fundamentally. The edge crack sensitivity of adiabatically blanked surfaces is investigated for the first time. To this end, hole expansion tests and modified shear tests are conducted. Moreover, the cutting edge is investigated with respect to the application as functional surface. Hence, the corrosion resistance and hardness are determined.The influence of mechanical material properties as well as the influence of deformation prior to the blanking process, which is adjusted accurately by a plane-strain-device, on the propagation velocity and geometry of the adiabatic shear band is analysed.By setting the hardness of press hardening steel 22MnB5, the influence of strength as well as the microstructure on the adiabatic process can be determined. The resulting microstructure and the required separation energy characterise the result of different process parameters. This analysis yields information on the suitability of adiabatic blanking after a previous forming process.
