Core facility for high-speed 6G/THz radio exploration (6Gcore)

Subject Area Communication Technology and Networks, High-Frequency Technology and Photonic Systems, Signal Processing and Machine Learning for Information Technology
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 509426459

It is proposed to establish a core facility, 6Gcore, for exploring novel 6G/THz wireless systems at the University of Wuppertal. By openening the high-end THz laboratories of the Institute of High-Frequency and Communication Technology (IHCT), 6Gcore aims to position the University of Wuppertal as one of the leading research centers in 6G/THz networks and build a dynamic scientific and industrial research community around it. At its core, 6Gcore will host a 6G-MIMO testbed expanding on the major DFG instrumentation initiative T-Net (DFG - 434501194). By combining the therein funded advanced multi-node high-speed test equipment with in-house developed, generic, silicon-based THz communication modules, 6Gcore builds a complete open hardware platform for THz-MIMO experiments. In addition, 6Gcore opens the system assembly and THz characterization laboratories of the IHCT to provide users with a holistic solution for THz system evaluation. This unique international offering supports communication scientists, technology innovators and service developers in the conduction of open-minded experiments at an early stage of the 6G roadmap. The offerings are supplied though a low-entry-barrier infrastructure comprising on-site measurement support, laboratory access and remote online task scheduling. Besides establishing a thrid party usage model, 6Gcore will actively drive research projects focusing on interdisciplinary cooperations to foster the core facilities visibility. The University of Wuppertal has commited to support 6Gcore during and beyond the funding period as part of the interdisciplinary center CM@S, which will guarantee the facilities sustainablity and scientific impact for a long time to come.
