Open-Access-Publicationfunding / 2023-2025 / Universität der Bundeswehr München

Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 512492996

In recent years, various instruments have been established at the Universität der Bundeswehr München with the support of the ongoing DFG project "Open Access Publizieren 2021 - 2022 / Universität der Bundeswehr München", which are already leading to a significant increase in OA publications. The second project applied for here is intended to give this development a foundation for the establishment of Open Access as the university's preferred and subsequently dominant form of publication, even after the end of funding. In order to achieve this goal, publication costs must first be permanently integrated into the university’s budget, as payment from literature funds is not possible due to the allocation of funds to the university. For this purpose, the long-term financial needs for publication funds must be determined. Since the current funding period has seen a welcome increase in the volume of OA publications, it can be assumed that this process is not yet complete. The DFG's funding is needed to ensure that costs can be covered during the period when budgetary solutions are being found.A further goal is therefore to continuously support and perpetuate the university's internal perception of OA as the preferred publication option. Already existing as well as new types of advisory and training services will be set in place in order to achieve the full OA publication potential. Even though the number of funded publications is comparatively small due to the size of the university, the ongoing optimisation of the application and processing process should be pursued in order to minimise transaction costs on the applicants’ as well as processing side. The financial data collected here, enriched with the publication data from AtheneForschung, should enable comprehensive reporting for both internal and external purposes. Finally, the AtheneForschung University Repository should be expanded to include a technical or organisational long-term archiving component that ensures that all OA publications by members of the university can be made available in the long term.
