Directional solidification of eutectics is a route to produce highly ordered metallic or semiconductor nanostructures. Depending on the eutectic system and the solidification parameters lamellar or fibrous structures are formed. A selective etching of one of the phases produces nanowires as it was demonstrated for the quasi-binary NiAl-Re eutectic. Other candidate systems to produce Au, Pt or Ag, nanowires, nanobelts or nanochannels will be investigated. The mechanism itself will be studied by structure and composition identification (FE-SEM, EDX, EBSD, SPM, ICP-OES, APFIM, AES, and XPS) under variation of the formation conditions. This shall allow controlling the formation of these nanostructures on the basis of the selected growth conditions and the use of templates. The advantage of nanowire arrays shall be demonstrated by means of a nanodisc electrode array for application in analytical chemistry and by preparation of a nanowire array tool for electrochemical nanomachining. Studies into the electrochemical behaviour of Rhenium are planned in order to overcome the lack of knowledge in the literature. This shall extend the applicability of the Re nanowire system grown in NiAl which is already available. It is intended to produce a Re STM tip for application at high temperatures.
