SFB 541:  Identies and Alterities. The Function of Alterity for the construction of Collective Identity

Subject Area Humanities
Term from 1997 to 2003
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481608

The research projects gathered under the collaborative research centre 541 deal with the relationship between conceptions of identity and alterity as deployed in discourses and symbols for the signifying of collective identities (nations, states, denominations, ethnic groups). Fictional constructions of identity in what linguists have come to call "acts of identity" or the establishing of "intentional history" are focussed on. On the other hand, processes of exclusion either of groups within collectives or foreign elements from within them are dealt with. These exclusions are either motivated by a discourse of norms and deviation from those norms, or they are constructions that can, ultimately, lead to the exiling or even extermination of so-called foreign elements from within the collective. The research projects also focus on interesting situations in which concepts of self and other are transgressed or hybridised.
