SFB 442:  Environmentally Friendly Tribosystems by suitable coatings and fluids with respect to the maschine tool

Subject Area Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Term from 1997 to 2009
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5481663

Goal of the collaborative research centre 442 is to develop environmentally friendly tribosystems of high performance. Therefore, a new method of developing tribosystems has been established. The research program is focused on tribosystems as being used in standard machine tools. New environmentally friendly fluids are developed and tested in tribosystems applying new surface coated materials. Aim is to transfer important tribological features from fluids onto these base materials. Taking this route certain additives are no longer required and the missing characteristics have to be taken on by specially coated materials. This needs an inter-disciplinary cooperation among different cross faculty areas. This is why the collaborative research centre consists of engineers, material scientists, chemists and medics. To ensure a determined approach to the tasks the collaborative research centre has been structured into three parts dealing with production of the components of the tribological systems, testing of the components and application as well as simulation.
