SFB 591:  Universal behaviour of plasmas far from equilibrium: heating, transport and structure formation

Subject Area Physics
Term from 2003 to 2007
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 5485380

Modern research in plasma physics reaches from technological applications via fusion problems to astrophysics. Although the research topics have a substantial bandwidth, numerous plasma systems exhibit strong similarities and, therefore, permit studies of their basic properties over a wide range of parameters. The behaviour of plasmas in a non-equilibrium state is of particular interest. Their dynamics, turbulence and interaction with the surroundings can be described with the methods of statistical physics. Often a validation of resulting concepts is only possible via a comparison of numerical simulations with experimental results or observations. On the basis of an interdisciplinary treatment of these topics that are central for experimental and theoretical plasma physics and also plasma-astrophyics, the Collaborative Research Centre aims, in particular, at studies of the heating, the acceleration and the structure formation in non-equilibrium plasmas. This way qualitatively new results will be obtained that are not limited to plasmaphysical subdisciplines and that will lead to an improved understanding of the plasma state.
