The general objective is the supply of a geophysical tool to identify and differentiate various types of density-driven mass and heat transport processes in the fluid column of deep boreholes. Knowing about the existence of such convective flows is important for hydrological investigations, fluid sampling, borehole geophysics, and geothermics. In the first phase of the project, the interpretation algorithm was successfully adapted and applied on logs from ICDP boreholes. Within the planned project extension, further insight into the strength of the density-driven flow and the intensity of the resulting transport processes is seeked. The difficulties of an in-situ transport determination for such low and density sensitive flows will be conquered by collecting a complex and multifaceted set of measuring and sampling data. The aim is to develop an add-on module for the Synthetic Convection Log (interpretation algorithm) that allows inferring the magnitude of the density-driven transport and that can be applied in the boreholes of the ICDP. In preparation for other ICDP locations, the method will be established and tested on the example of the KTB main hole.
