Final Report Abstract

One aim of this project was to shed more light on the mechanism of electrocodeposition, i.e. the incorporation of particles into a metal matrix during an electroplating process. Such layers are called dispersion coatings and can have optimized mechanical and physical properties (hardness, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, etc.) compared to the pristine metals. Therefore the surface finishing industry is highly interested in reliable and cost-effective processes for their preparation. The development of the processes should be driven by fundamental research and not by trial-and-error approaches. However, the latter is still often the case in research labs. In the project the electrodeposition of selected model systems (Ni and Zn with different types of nanoparticles) under well-defined conditions was investigated. The influence of crucial deposition parameters, such as temperature, current density, and composition of the electrolyte on the properties of the deposits was studied. We could identify parameter sets for obtaining uniform layers, with improved hardness and wear resistance and with specific crystalline orientations and morphologies. The influence of the permittivity and the ionic strength of the electrolytes were studied intensively for a Watts type Ni electrolyte containing nanoparticles. These results clearly show that it is crucial to understand the interaction forces between the particles themselves and between the particles and the substrate. Dispersion coatings are now a life topic in our group. An AiF-CORNET project that will address their usage as wear resistant functional coatings in aerospace industry has just been approved. The fundamental results achieved within this DFG research grant form an excellent base for the development of industrial electroplating processes.
