Spatial and temporal structures in microplasmas

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term from 2009 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 74729252

The Project uses modeling and simulation to investigate the dynamics of microplasmas. The focus is on boundary sheaths, planar microdischarges, micro thin cathode discharges, microcavity arrays, and pulsed corona sources. Two complementary approaches are used. The "hybrid" approach employs two- or three-dimensional self-consistent numerical codes to describe the behavior of all species (electrons, ions, excited, and ground-state neutrals) and all interactions (elastic and inelastic collisions, emission and absorption of radiation, interactions with the walls). The "focussed" approach discusses specialized models which contain only the most important interactions, reduce the dimensionality, or represent only parts of the discharges. Comparison of the models and the experiments will uncover the exact operation mechanism of the discharges.
