Within this proposal we would like to combine our expertise in imaging magnetization dynamics with the progress we have made in fabricating and characterizing point contacts suitable for the generation of large amplitude spin waves due to spin transfer effects. We will study the emission characteristics of spin transfer induced spin waves emanating from point contacts. Furthermore, we will study spin wave interference in simple test devices such as spin wave switches. Spin wave propagation in thin ferromagnetic films is not only interesting from a fundamental point of view, but might also become of importance for applications. One example is spin wave logic. Here, the special dispersion relations of spin waves in thin film can be exploited. It is possible to construct magnetic microstructures with areas showing positive dispersion or negative dispersion. The combination of such elements leads to interesting phenomena (spin wave switches, phase shifters etc.) A second example is the construction of phased arrays of spin transfer torque oscillators. The dispersion relations of spin waves need to be taken into account for the development of phase locking mediated by propagating spin waves.
