The study suggested here concentrates on the Late Carboniferous to Permian evolution of a sedimentary basin in North Victoria Land, Antarctica, which is part of the Transantarctic Basin System of Gondwana. The deposits of this basin can be used as archive to decipher the major controlling parameters on the depositional and environmental evolution during the transition from Late Paleozoic icehouse to Early Mesozoic greenhouse conditions at near-polar latitudes. The combination of lithostratigraphy, biostratigraphy, architectural analysis of sedimentary facies and sediment provenance analysis will enable the reconstruction of depositional dynamics, type and evolution of the basin, and the characterization of source areas. The integration of sedimentary facies analysis, biofacies analysis, biostratigraphy and geochemical proxies will provide a detailed picture of the paleoenvironmental evolution during and subsequent to the Late Carboniferous/Early Permian deglaciation, and will help to improve the understanding of global changes around the Permian/Triassic boundary in high-latitude biota.
