The CINHEKS design analyses how HEIs are networked within distinct knowiedge societies in Europe, the USA and Japan. The study wil iluminate nature of linkages conecting academics, HEIs and crucial actors within the dynamics of knowiedge production in these regions. The objectives of CINHEKS are based on the juxtaposition historicaly distinct societies, global policy debates and conceptualy defined empirical data, chosen to reveal their key similarities or diferences. These objectives are:• The historical analysis of key featureshaping and explaining contextual diferences underlying present paterns of knowledge production.• The analysis of poicy discoursexplaining how nation states and regions have understod promoted the development of knowledge transfer and utilisation.• Empirical studies based on institutional case and surveys explaining the way in which basic units, HEIs and academics are networked in distinct knowiedge societies.Operationaly, these objectives wil be pursued via focus on key themes which are analyzed in the framework of knowiedge society discourses defined by Välimand Hofman. The CINHEKS design analyses these themes in a critical maner.The most relevant units of analysis are basic and individuals in HEIs. Focusing on these units of analysis also highüghts linkages with Copyrights, patents, legal contracts and formal agrements with companies funding bodies, al nodes that define knowledge flow inetworks because of their legal Status. The methodologicalinkage the thre CINHEKS objectives wil show how empirical evidence coresponds to curent policy discusion and political debates. The CINHESK matrix comparative design forms a sequential, explanatory mixsd methods design which integrates the Substantive focal points, methodological aproach of each IP, the datand resuKs. The outcome athis level of analysis is an international comparative study contrasting thre distinct regions of the globe, in terms CINHEKS objectives
