The general goal of the project is to provide innovative descriptive resources for and modern linguistic analysis of two related Ob-Ugric languages Khanty (Ostyak) and Mansi (Vogul): a database consisting of a text corpus with glossing and translation into two major European languages, a thesaurus combining linguistic, ethnological and socio-historical information on the Ob-Ugric cultures as reflected in the lexicon of the Ob-Ugric languages, and a grammatical description taking into account the recent strong theoretical developments in the field of typological linguistics, with special emphasis on grammatical categories and linguistic mechanisms that differ from the Indo-European standard and so present difficulties in describing them in traditional terminology. The team from Germany will be mainly responsible for the etymologic dictionary of Ob-Ugriclanguages, for work with German archives on Khanty and V. Černetsov’s archive on Mansi, and theanalysis of data from the Northern dialects of Mansi (especially verbal categories like evidentials andmiratives, constructions of simple and complex sentence and information structuring). It will be alsoresponsible for the general coordination of the work in the project.
