Control of formation of polymorphic molecule crystals

Subject Area Solid State and Surface Chemistry, Material Synthesis
Term from 2009 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 141620625

The aim of the project is the characterization of novel metastable crystalline phases and the elucidation of their formation mechanism based on selected organic molecules. The super cooled melt and the supersaturated solution under levitation conditions serve as precursor phases for the formation of metastable crystal. We focus on the impact of diffusion controlled and diffusionless crystallization processes as well as the possibility surface induced polymorphism and selective crystallization under levitation conditions. Time resolved in situ investigations based on a variety of experimental methods (Dielectric spectroscopy, Powder X-ray Diffraction, Raman Spectroscopy, Differential Scanning Calorimetry, Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope) are planned. The following model systems will be investigated: carbamazepine, acetaminophen, indomethazin, and felodipine.
