The recent progress in the development of weakly coordinating anions (WCAs) has led to an expansion of the synthetic possibilities during the last decade. The project shall lead to cationic beryllium Lewis acids of type [BeX]+ (X = Cp, halogen, alkoxy ¿). The electrophilic character of these cations shall be used to synthesize new and very unusual types of main group complexes, such as addition compounds with alkenes, alkynes or even the noble gases. To stabilize such cationic complexes in solution and in the solid state, suitable non basic solvents and inert very weakly coordinating anions have to be employed. Preliminary quantum chemical and Born Haber cycle calculations suggest that the proposed new main group chemistry should be accessible. As an alternative to known WCAs, a new and in principle easily accessible WCA class, i. e. sterically protected silanolato complexes, shall be investigated. Again, preliminary quantum chemical data on such new WCAs are very promising. If successful in electrophilic Be cation chemistry, it is clear that such new WCAs have considerable impact on all areas of chemistry, where WCAs are needed, e. g. catalysis, batteries, electrolytes, ionic liquids etc. The synthesized compounds shall be characterized by standard methods like X-ray analysis, NMR, IR, Raman, mass spectrometry and TG/DSC, additionally flanked by quantum chemical calculations.
