Higher plants are sessile organisms that have evolved a high plasticity for adaptation to environmental challenges. Pathogens and abiotic stress such as drought and salt stress severely impact plant performance and productivity. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) serves as an endogenous messenger in biotic and abiotic stress responses. In addition, ABA is required to fine-tune growth and development under non-stress conditions. The recent identification of ABA receptors and the emerging combinatorial assembly of a multitude of different ABA receptors provide the incentive to propose the detailed analysis of ABA receptor complexes and their interaction with known target proteins. In addition, the elucidation of the molecular mechanism regulating ABA receptor activity as well as the three-dimensional structural analysis of an ABA-receptor complex is proposed.
