Metal nanoparticles are incorporated in polymers in many applications ranging from optics and electronics to antibacterial materials. While in the latter case metal ion release is essential for the antibacterial function, it is often detrimental and affects the stability and functionality of the nanocomposites during long-term aging. This project aims at understanding the mechanisms and kinetics of transfer of metal ions from metallic nanoparticles into a polymer matrix and thereby at corrosion processes at the buried nanoparticle/polymer interfaces as a function of external parameters, size and composition of the nanoparticles, and the properties of the polymer host. Emphasis will be placed on Ag and Ag-Au particles. The multicomponent particles will be investigated as homogeneous alloys and core-shell structures. Based on preparatory work it will also be investigated how the silver ion transfer kinetics are influenced by trace amounts of catalytically active gold and other noble metals. The interdisciplinary research team encompasses expertise in materials science, electrochemistry, and nanotechnology.
