Compact machine modules for micro machining

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Term from 2010 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 171863739

The aim of this project is to investigate a new fluid dynamic drive and guidance method and its potential for use in small machines for the production of micro-workpieces. In the first funding period, the possibilities and limits of the new type of driving and guiding principle was explored by the construction of a multi-coordinate direct-drive in the form of a xy-table for the medium "air".In the second funding period, initially, the potential for further functional integration will be explored by extending the degrees of motion by a rotational degree of freedom. The design is carried out, among other methods, with the support of genetic algorithms. The developed methods are verified by the construction of a xytheta-table. To be able to expand the knowledge base for the new drive and guidance method independent of the working fluid and thereby further develop a complete theory for this new technology, the use of liquid working media such as water and oil is also being explored using a hydraulic prototype. In the final complexity period the basics for the new drive and guidance method will be verified and expanded, if it is necessary, by testing in under real process conditions. This is accomplished by a synthesis and composition of the researched xytheta-tables with other modules to modular desktop machines. By the optimization and investigation of interactions with other units, the modules will be qualified for the micromanufacturing.
