The sub-project of Medieval History aims at analyzing and comparing processes of sacralization in different border areas. In this context it deals with the region of Southern Italy dominated by Christians of Western and Greek Orthodox creed as well as Islamic groups, with the Iberian Peninsula (predominantly under Muslim rule after 711) as well as with the Middle East, where Islam and the Greek Orthodox Church were prevailing until the crusades gave rise to a new concept of a sacred region in Latin Christianity. The research comprises the study of the aspect of sacrality tied to the regions and the dynamics of sacral concepts including the dimensions of time, tradition and valuation. The working steps lead from analyzing the sacralization of so called “border saints” to concepts of sacralised places and times whereas the last part draws attention to different perceptions of martyrdom during the crusades.
