The Ricci flow is a geometric (weakly parabolic) evolution equation on the space of Riemannian metrics of a smooth manifold. In order to understand in higher dimensions the long-time behavior and the formation of singularities of solutions, new analytic (heat kernal) estimates and new algebraic estimates (from geometric invariant theory) will be crucial.
