Mathematical modelling of grinding wheel structures

Subject Area Metal-Cutting and Abrasive Manufacturing Engineering
Mathematics
Term from 2011 to 2017
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 180925066

The objectives of this proposal are based on the work of the first year of research and extend the original research objectives. The overall objective of this research project is to create a grinding wheel model, which is based on the volumetric composition of an abrasive tool. As a result the spatial structure of the components will be depicted realistically. With such a model, it is possible to determine the resulting wheel topography and the mechanical properties of abrasive tools in order to predict their grinding behavior.Starting from the particle volume distribution, the particle size distribution, the grain shapes, the pore volume, as well as the type of bonding and the bonding volume, the volume model is developed. Based on this volume model, the grinding wheel surface can be modeled. The aim is to determine the most important process specific characteristics of the grinding wheel. For this strength properties of the system are take into account, as well as the influence of wear and different dressing and processing conditions.
