The projects aims at the critical edition and translation of Ockham's major political treatise, his Dialogus. This monumental work remains the last item in his vast oeuvre which has not yet been published in a modern critical edition. The project is part of an international cooperation headed by Prof. John Kilcullen and endorsed by the British Academy. The Cologne base of the project is assigned with the edition of part 3.2 of the Dialogus. The British Academy has ensured the publication in the series Auctores Britannici Medii Aevi. Part 3.2 originated in the last years of Ockhams life and deals with the constitution of the medieval Roman Empire. Ockham commented on the relation of the Empire to the Nation States, on the separation of state and church, and on the role of emperor and pope. His thoughts are considered to be among the groundbreaking contributions to modern political philosophy. The edition will make available, for the first time, a reliable text for future generations of historians.
