The project focusses on the diversified activities of Jewesses in the early Italian womens movement between 1861 and 1922, which have been neglected so far in relevant research. Of particular interest is the relationship between Jewish emancipation and womens emancipation, the biographies of the Italian-Jewish activists as well as the female images they developed in their writings. The study combines methods of gender history and biographical research with those of social history and discourse analysis. The sample of women selected for this project includes writers, journalists and social assistants in traditional Jewish, laicistic and Zionistic areas. There will be also a focus on the most important associations, social institutions and journals in which Italian Jewesses participated, often as founders. In this way, a large spectrum of social, journalistic and literary activities will be grasped, and findings on the networks of Jewish women in Italy and on an international level can be achieved. The conception of female images, the feminist aims and demands of Italian Jewesses, but also the reception of their ideas by the Italian-Jewish public will be examined on the basis of contemporary journals.
