Synthesis of self-organizing and immobilizing conjugated polymers and study of the electronic and optoelectronic properties

Subject Area Preparatory and Physical Chemistry of Polymers
Term from 2011 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 192409152

Using alkoxycarbonyl substituted monomers as for example N-Boc-protected dibromo-phenanthridine and suitable co-monomers (as for example dialkylfluorene diboronester), conjugated polymers will be prepared upon metal-catalyzed polycondensation. The alkoxycarbonyl groups render the polymers soluble in common organic solvents and suitable for solution processing. After the polymeric film is prepared by solution casting or spin-coating, it will be annealed at elevated temperatures in order to cleave the alkoxycarbonyl groups thermally. After cleavage, the polymers are able to form a hydrogen-bridged structure with increased order of the material. Solid polymeric films with strongly decreased solubility and improved adhesion to the substrate are obtained, which might be useful as active components in electronic devices such as photovoltaic, light emitting or electrochromic devices. The photo- and electroactive properties of the immobilized polymeric films (fluorescence, electroluminescence, electrochromism and/or photovoltaic properties) will be investigated.
