Intermodal aspects of mobility pricing

Subject Area Urbanism, Spatial Planning, Transportation and Infrastructure Planning, Landscape Planning
Term from 2010 to 2012
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 193139143

Introducing mobility pricing as an instrument of traffic management, even if it concerns only a single transport mode, regularly affects other transport modes by influencing the mobility behaviour, as well. These intermodal aspects have to be considered in the planning and evaluation of instruments. Such an integrated view is possible in different stages, up to a comprehensive, fully coordinated approach covering all transport modes. For an evaluation, meanwhile first approaches for modelling the effects of mobility pricing are available, although most of them only focus on specific instruments or transport modes. Quite often the mentioned intermodal effects and interactions between the instruments are not considered during the planning process sufficiently. The aim of this research is to collect and improve the knowledge about intermodal aspects in traffic management, with a focus on mobility pricing, and to develop a modelling approach which considers mobility pricing and its effects on all transport modes. This enhances the planning reliability for traffic engineers and supports a more efficient and reliable traffic management. Therefore six work packages shall be elaborated. Based on a literature review, existing mobility pricing approaches as well as existing modelling approaches will be collected. A theoretical analysis as well as a closer look at case studies will help to identify the possibilities of an intermodal approach of mobility pricing, and therewith the requirements for a comprehensive modelling. Furthermore based on the analysis of opportunities, risks and forms of intermodal approaches, a modelling approach will be developed.
