EXC 1023: ImmunoSensation: Das immunsensorische System
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Das Immunsystem spielt für unsere Gesundheit, aber auch bei der Entstehung vieler Erkrankungen eine zentrale Rolle. Mit dem innovativen Konzept des immunsensorischen Systems, das Nicht-Immunzellen und die Interaktion mit dem Nervensystem sowie den Metabolismus mit einbezieht, hat sich ImmunoSensation zu einem der führenden Zentren für immunologische Forschung, insbesondere für angeborene Immunität, entwickelt. So wurden neue Liganden und Signalmoleküle identifiziert, eine neue Klassifikation von Makrophagen eingeführt, das Verständnis der Krebs-Immun-Interaktion erweitert, ein negativer Einfluss der westlichen Ernährung auf das Immunsystem entdeckt, sowie ein neuer Therapieansatz für die altersbedingte Verminderung der Gedächtnisleistung entwickelt. Zwei Biotech-Firmen wurden ausgegründet, und zwei neue Wirkstoffe befinden sich in klinischen Studien zur Tumortherapie. Internationale Forschungskooperationen mit Melbourne und Osaka konnten während der Clusterlaufzeit formalisiert werden und zentrale Themen wurden zu neuen Sonderforschungsbereichen weiterentwickelt. Für die Entwicklung des immunologischen Schwerpunkts war das internationale Rekrutierungskonzept von ImmunoSensation außerordentlich wichtig. An der Universität Bonn wurden seit 2012 zwölf Professuren für die Forschungsthematik eingerichtet und verstetigt, freigewordene Professuren auf dem Gebiet wurden im selben Themenfeld wiederbesetzt. Das Deutsche Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen (DZNE) hat zwei Professuren zur Neuroinflammation geschaffen. Über 20% der Berufungen waren international. Nachwuchswissenschaftler*innen mit ERC, NRW Rückkehrer oder Emmy-Noether Förderungen konnten erfolgreich nach Bonn geholt werden. Im Rahmen von ImmunoSensation aufgebaute Strukturen umfassen zwei englischsprachige Masterstudiengänge Medical Immunosciences and Infection und Immunobiology, die internationale Graduiertenschule Immunosciences and Infection, zentrale Forschungsplattformen und ein Koordinationsbüro zur operativen Umsetzung. Zur Infrastrukturentwicklung beigetragen haben der Neubaubeginn der Forschungsgebäude BMZ II und LIMES-TIS, sowie die Entwicklung der Core Facilities und deren Ausstattung mit neuen Forschungsgeräten. Maßnahmen zur Familienförderung wurden erfolgreich implementiert, wie z.B. die Einrichtung von zwei Familienzimmern und zusätzliche Betreuungsangebote für Kinder. Wissenschaftlerinnen wurden durch spezifische Projektförderung, Coaching und Netzwerkmöglichkeiten unterstützt. Neu eingerichtete Professuren wurden zu 50% mit Frauen besetzt und die Zahl der beteiligten Projektleiterinnen stieg von ursprünglich 19% auf 32% an. Insgesamt konnte ImmunoSensation, nicht zuletzt auch durch die Etablierung von Förderprogrammen für Nachwuchs und Gleichstellung, einen nachhaltigen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis immunsensorischer Prozesse und zur Identifizierung neuer therapeutischer Ansätze leisten. Damit ist der Aufbau eines in Deutschland einmaligen und international sichtbaren wissenschaftlichen Zentrums für Immunologie gelungen.
