Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Der interdisziplinäre Exzellenzcluster "Hearing4all" hat das visionäre Ziel, besseres Hören für alle Menschen mit allen Schwerhörigkeitsgraden (über 18% unserer Bevölkerung und ca. 50% aller über 65-Jährigen) zu erreichen. Damit adressiert der Cluster den erheblichen Bedarf an funktionalen, individualisierten Hörhilfen in unserer alternden Kommunikationsgesellschaft, die die Sprachkommunikation im Alltag unterstützen. Die Principal Investigators (PIs) verfolgten dieses Ziel mit der Entwicklung neuer diagnostischer Instrumente und eines Pathophysiologie-basierten, individualisierten therapeutischen Ansatzes, der zu besseren Hörgeräten, allgegenwärtiger assistiver Technologie sowie innovativen Hörimplantaten führt. Durch die Kombination von Grundlagenforschung mit klinischer, angewandter und translationaler Forschung führte der Cluster Spitzen-Hörforschung durch und erzielte einzigartige Innovationen in der Rehabilitationstechnologie. Dazu gehören mehrsprachige Sprachhörtests, auditorische Mittelhirnimplantate oder präzise Vorhersagen individueller Hörfähigkeit mittels maschinellen Lernens mit dem Ziel einer besseren Diagnose, besserer Hörhilfen und besserer assistiver Technologien zur Hörunterstützung und Präzisionschirurgie. Die Forschung ist in sieben interdisziplinären, flexiblen Arbeitsgruppen innerhalb von drei Forschungsbereichen organisiert: A) Diagnostische Charakterisierung des Individuums zur optimalen Beurteilung der Hörbeeinträchtigung, B) Optimierung von Hörhilfen durch Anwendung Theorie-basierter Funktionsprinzipien, C) Entwicklung neuer assistiver Technologien, um die Hörunterstützung exakt auf die individuellen Bedürfnisse für alle Hörsituationen abzustimmen. Der Cluster hat die komplementäre Forschungsexpertise zu Hörgeräten und Implantaten an den international anerkannten Standorten Oldenburg und Hannover vorangebracht und verknüpft. Beide Standorte haben nachhaltige, gemeinsame Strukturen an den beteiligten Universitäten etabliert, um Grundlagen-, klinische und translationale Forschung zu koordinieren, d. h. das Exzellenzzentrum für Hörforschung (Oldenburg/Hannover), die Joint Research Academy und das Translational Research Centre, das die Arbeit von Physikern, Ingenieuren, Psychologen, Biologen, Medizinern und Klinikern integriert. Zu den wichtigsten Errungenschaften gehören zwei neue interdisziplinäre Forschungsgebäude (NeSSy in Oldenburg, NIFE in Hannover), 9 neue feste Professuren, 10 neue Nachwuchsgruppen (deren Leitung inzwischen fast alle eine feste Professur bekleiden), die Beförderung von mehr als 50 Postdoktoranden und Nachwuchsgruppenleitern auf Positionen in Wissenschaft, Klinik und Industrie sowie die Verleihung renommierter Wissenschaftspreise (u. a. zwei ERC Starting Grants und der Deutsche Zukunftspreis). Verschiedene Forschungsprojekte haben aus dem Cluster heraus erfolgreich eine Förderung erreicht, darunter ein neuer SFB "Hörakustik" und die Fortsetzung des aktuellen Clusters als „Hearing4all 2.0“ bis 2025.
