Functional coatings are required in many high-tech applications. They are, e.g., used in aerodynamic wind-tunnel experiments for monitoring flows and temperature gradients on surfaces. The development of dual sensor materials based on oxygen and temperature sensitive probes that can be applied by low cost, wet-chemical processes such as spray-coating or spin-coating has a great technological impact. A promising avenue to obtain such functional coatings relies on the smart combination of photoluminescent oxygen- and temperature-sensitive transition metal-complexes with various copolymers exhibiting different oxygen permeability. This material design offers favorable perspectives in sensor technology and for imaging applications due to the bright and color-tunable emission of the targeted iridium(III) complexes used as indicators. This joint project addresses the development of smart combinations of iridium(III) complexes with an optimized composition of oxygen blocking and oxygen permeable copolymer segments, enabling a fine-tuning of the sensor response. It can be expected that this project will have a beneficial impact towards the design of improved and highly sensitive materials for multi-channel sensors and imaging applications with outstanding properties.
