Due to the increasing importance of lightweight constructions the demand of components with complex geometries and tailored mechanical properties is growing. In order to broaden the range of possible applications for Magnesium sheets adapted process strategies for the production of components with complex properties profiles have to be developed. Because of the manifold geometries of the die orifice the extrusion process offers the possibility to manufacture profiles with complex cross sections. Additionally through an adjusted thermo-mechanical process management the microstructure and thus the mechanical properties of the profiles can be specifically defined. The above-mentioned advantages can be used to produce geometrically (macroscopically) as well as microstructurally (microscopically) graded sheets through extrusion. Since there is a lack of knowledge in the extrusion of wide and graded Magnesium sheets the goal of this project is to deliver fundamental results on the grading of extruded sheets through defined local variations of the temperature and/ or of the deformation ratio.
