Usability of individualized hearing systems - Interaction of algorithms and interactive control

Subject Area Acoustics
Term from 2012 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 197369429

Despite intensive research and development, current hearing aids are still unable to completely compensate for a hearing impairment. A fundamental problem is the suboptimal adjustment of the constantly advancing hearing aid signal processing to the individual hearing impairment and the listening requirements in a given acoustic situation. The aim of this project is therefore to integrate the knowledge about the individual auditory deficit with techniques for the determination of useroriented hearing requirements (e.g., gestural control of hearing aids) and with novel hearing aid algorithms, in order to optimize the benefit and the usability of hearing systems. For this, all demonstrator systems provided by the different projects of the Research Unit will be combined and optimized with respect to a number of relevant practical application scenarios. For defining the relevant acoustic scenes, realizing the relevant application scenarios in these scenes, and realizing the evaluation experiments conducted in these scenarios, novel interactive systems for dynamically generating virtual acoustic scenes are developed, which constitutes a second research focus besides the interactive hearing systems themselves. Because ofthe integration of contributions from all projects and the provision of evaluation scenarios, project A constitutes a central integrating part of the whole Research Unit. It contributes to all cardinal problems tackled by the Research Unit, i.e., noise problem (integration and interaction of algorithms for the binaural hearing-aid), presentation problem (audio rendering of communication conditions for hearing-aid evaluation) and individualization problem (interactive user control of signal processing by gestures).
