Evolutionary rates and evolutionary trends in Carboniferous and Permian ammonoids
Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse
Although the main focus of the project is the Carboniferous and Permian ammonoids it is only right to include ammonoids from other periods in order to place changes in the Carboniferous and Permian into perspective. The research carried out in the following three projects has highlighted repetition in ammonoid evolutionary history not only in terms of adult morphology but also with relation to the ontogenetic development of the conch leading to the adult morphology. The ammonoid conch was interacting with the marine environment and therefore its form was shaped by various influencing factors. Iteration of conch forms between different groups as shown in this report is suggestive of repeating ecological conditions not only affecting the adults but also controlling the development of the ammonoid from hatching onwards.
