New reports show that licensed wireless systems do not fully exploit network resources in terms of bandwidth. On the other hand, the demand for higher data rates is increasing, which requires better exploitation of bandwidth. One possibility to increase the efficiency of communication networks is the use of cognitive radio. Cognitive radio is an emerging field in interference networks, whose techniques promise improved network performance in terms of spectral efficiency. It makes better use of bandwidth by, e.g., “filling gaps” in the spectrum, i.e., using frequency bands that are not fully exploited. It is anticipated that cognitive systems will play a more important role in the future of communications. The study of cognitive networks is an ongoing process these days, aiming at designing practical transmit strategies for cognitive networks on the one hand, and deriving theoretical limits of performance of such networks on the other hand. In this project, our objective is to study the impact of cognition in bi-directional relay interference networks. We aim to investigate the given network in terms of capacity and degrees of freedom using tools from information theory and signal processing. In this process, it is intended to develop transmit strategies (coding/decoding) and methods of interference management therein, and compare different cognition possibilities.
