Dune bedfroms generated by pyroclastic density currents

Subject Area Palaeontology
Term from 2012 to 2015
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 207474467

Final Report Year 2016

Final Report Abstract

Rather than bringing hasty and fixed new interpretations as answers, the project was strongly based on thorough documentation and description of natural examples. This permitted to challenge traditional interpretations in term of dynamics of formation for the dune bedforms (and the antidune interpretation), to open up new possibilities in the interpretation of PDC deposits, and use sedimentary features that were often disregarded in traditional analysis. The wind tunnel measurements are a tool for quantification of flow velocities based on field observation. The variety of methods that were used permitted to obtain a strong dataset. Rather than answers, this brought new ideas and questions that will be investigated in the future project.
