This research proposal aims to explore a fascinating novel and alternative concept to control microstructure in Carbon Allotrope Bulk Heterojunctions (CA BHJs). Advanced CA nanoparticle concepts with electronically communicating surfactants will enable efficient charge transport or charge separation across the interface between fullerene and other organic semiconductor nanoparticle composites. This strategy extends the tool kit to control a BHJ microstructure into the 10s and 100s of nm regime with unprecedented purity and completes our methods to manipulate a BHJ´s microstructures across a wide range of length scales. The implications of such novel concept of microstructure control will be explored in three work packages.
