Though the crossover between art and fashion has become a much discussed issue in the last few years, the role of the magazines (both art and fashion) on whose pages these complex interactions play out is rarely addressed. My research project focuses on avantgarde and fashion magazines from the 1920s to the present day, including Rogue, Harpers Bazaar, Vogue, View, Andy Warhols Interview, File Megazine, and Purple, focusing in particular on the work of their respective editors (most notably Alexander Liberman, Andy Warhol, and General Idea). My research explores the visual strategies that connect fashion and art within these magazines, and develop a framework for considering the role of fashion in the artistic avantgardes. One objective is to analyze the constructions of identity created by the depiction of fashion and art, and the connections between them, in magazines. A second objective is to open a complex (magazines combine photography, drawing, text and layout) and overlooked medium up for inclusion in the histories of art and fashion.
