Cerebral Spreading Inflammation (CSI) after Acute Subarachnoid Hemorrhage (aSAH) - An Intraparenchymal Reaction to an Extraparenchymal Disease (B12)

Subject Area Clinical Neurology; Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology
Term from 2012 to 2016
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 29837756

The project will investigate the pathophysiology of secondary brain injury following subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Specifically, B12 seeks to understand the relevance and mechanisms leading to a spreading intracerebral immune response and subsequent delayed neuronal damage after SAH. The project will (i) focus on the phenotype and cytokine profile of activated microglia in SAH, (ii) evaluate the role of extracellular DNA for secondary brain injury after SAH, and (iii) assess the effect of eRNA on microglia and its downstream signalling in vivo. Therefore, the project plans to (iv) modulate levels of eRNA and thus inhibit eRNA-induced TNF-a release.
