The objective of the cooperation between the Freie Universität Berlin and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem is to establish a bi- and multinational interdisciplinary network of research institutions and researchers that allows for innovative interdisciplinary human rights research. The doctoral researchers will have the opportunity to conduct research in three fields, dealing with these main challenges: human rights during crises and emergencies; human rights and diversity; and human rights and globalisation. The programme intends to put the analysis on three different levels: concepts, justifications and modes of implementation. The historical relationship between Israel and Germany, as well as the unique experiences of both countries will be the basis of a fruitful exchange of human rights researchers and practitioners.
The main goal of the International Research Training Group is to enable young researchers to complete their individual research projects independently within three years, supported by continuous individualised supervision provided by bi-national teams of supervisors and advisors. The mobility phase and communication technologies will also contribute to the intercultural experience. The total of 20 doctoral and three postdoctoral researchers in Berlin and Jerusalem respectively will participate in the International Research Training Group.
Postdoctoral researchers will make a vital contribution by offering their expertise in certain fields of the research programme. At the same time, postdoctoral researchers will further enhance their international visibility, their teaching experience and their knowledge in organising academic events and in science management in general. The programmes qualification strategy comprises a three-year-programme for each of three cohorts of young researchers with different backgrounds in human rights.
Doctoral researchers are going to present their research at the annual advanced summer schools and to discuss human rights issues with outstanding scholars and practitioners affiliated with both participating universities and other associated institutions by attending various meetings and courses in Germany and Israel. The young researchers will further be provided with key qualifications preparing them for an international career in academia as well as for the national or international non-academic job market. Additionally, the International Research Training Group will enable researchers to present research findings at conferences and publish them in international journals or edited volumes.
